When December rolls around it seems the amount of food we eat here in the U.S. goes up too. Most people gain around 1-2 lb. during the holiday season. It may not seem like a lot, but considering most people keep that weight on and gain again year after year – well, it adds up.
The best treatment is prevention. But what can you do when you just can’t resist those tasty treats? Try adding a little more exercise to your daily routine. I know – you don’t have time to make it to the gym, right? Here are a few ideas to help you increase your activity level and keep the scale from going up.
1. Park in the furthest parking spot from your destination. Whether it’s at work or the mall it seems everyone looks for the closest spot. So feel free to take the spot no one wants – you know, the one way out in left field. It may take you a couple more minutes to walk in, but you’ll use a few more calories doing it everyday.
2. Take the stairs. No more elevators or escalators – use the stairs. There are times when it’s actually faster since you don’t have to wait for the elevator to stop at your floor. Stair walking is great exercise, and even a few minutes is better than none.
3. Kick it up a notch in your daily activities. Put on some music with a good beat while you’re cleaning or cooking and exaggerate your movements a bit – almost like dancing while your working. You’ll get in a workout and have a clean house.
4. Walk. If you’re out shopping in the mall keep a brisk pace and take the long route to the stores you want to visit. You’ll get in a little work out and get some shopping done too.
Just because the holidays are here doesn’t mean you have to gain weight. Take a few extra steps now to maintain where you are. You’ll be healthier in the long run, and thankful when the new year rolls around!
