Strawberry Blueberry Smoothies

My youngest son recently tried his hand at developing a new smoothie recipe, and he’s been begging me to share it with you. He’d been having a rough couple weeks and wanted to use the strawberries and blueberries we had in the freezer. He needed a little positive encouragement and a feeling of success.

You see, sometimes being eleven is kind of tough. You’re not old enough to get a job like your big brother or sister. And when you do try to be creative and earn some spending money by starting your own neighborhood business – you find out that no one is interested.

I’ve got to give my little guy credit though. He persevered and walked all around our neighborhood offering a pooper scooping service to neighbors with dogs and then a light bulb changing service to those with burned out bulbs in their lamp posts. He did his research on that one, watching in the evening to see who needed it and who didn’t. But for all his work, he had no jobs.

So when he wanted to make up a smoothie recipe on his own I was all for it. I want my kids to be comfortable in the kitchen, and a smoothie recipe is something he could easily learn to make.

With a little guidance and training on how to use the blender, he came up with a strawberry-blueberry smoothie. It’s all his, something he created and was successful at.

I was happy he chose some healthy ingredients with blueberries, strawberries, and Greek yogurt. You can never go wrong with berries. They’re filled with antioxidants and vitamins. Greek yogurt and milk balance out the carbohydrates with protein and calcium.

The smoothies turned out great and my pictures don’t do them justice. You can also see the wonderful, and worthwhile, mess that came with them. So try them. They’re delicious and healthy. And if you have a tween in the house that needs a little success story – guide them to the kitchen, don’t worry about the mess, and let them have fun creating their own healthy recipes.

Do your kids like experimenting in the kitchen? What’s their favorite thing to make? I’d love to hear how you encourage your kids to be creative in the kitchen. Share with us in the comments below.

  1. I make a smoothie very similar to this except I add a banana and goji berries. I love that your son is motivated to be an entrepreneur at such a young age, Marie! Twenty years ago he could have had a curbside smoothie stand, lol.
Such a sweet post – thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. I’ve never tried goji berries in anything! That sounds wonderful. I’ll have to search the market for them. And yes, he is pretty motivated. He’s a very passionate kid with a lot of energy. Curbside smoothies would be awesome. Thanks for stopping! 🙂
