Hummus is a food everyone should know how to make. It’s filled with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, making it a healthy substitute for other less nutrient dense dips. Hummus is also easy to make at home, no need for the store-bought kind. And it’s simple enough to make with your kids. My youngest son and I had fun making this avocado hummus the other day.
Though hummus is usually made with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice, we mixed things up a bit this time and made it with a Mexican flair. We left out the tahini and lemon juice and added avocado, roasted jalapenos, lime juice, cilantro, and my son’s recommendation – curry. After he tasted a few grains of it we decided to add it to the final product. Curry provided just the right flavor boost we were looking for.
There are many ways to make hummus at home. Besides traditional and avocado hummus, you could make it with roasted garlic, roasted red pepper, olives, pesto, and much more. Take a look in your pantry and find the flavor combinations that interest you the most.
